LET ME HELP YOU PREP

If you are a keen follower of my journey then you know skin is my jam. Over the years as a makeup artist, I have understood the power of skincare and how it immensely contributes to a seamless makeup application. Skincare is how we prep the skin for makeup application. Skincare also contributes to the longevity and the look of your makeup application. If you love your application to look as skin-like as possible, then your skin prep bag is an important tool in your arsenal. In this blog post, you will find ten tips that may influence or help you create your perfect skincare prep bag for your makeup kit! Remember, failure to plan is planning to fail!

  • Learn about the basics of skincare and skin types. I know we already have a lot to learn as makeup artists but dismissing skincare knowledge or attempting to just buy what other makeup artists have in their skincare bags is not the way to win this game.

  • Get the largest cotton pads you can find. This makes applying product to skin faster and even more comfortable for your client.

  • Decant your products into smaller bottles and tubs. This is, of course, a clever move for any organized makeup artist but it also gives you the chance to carry an extensive range of products helping you handle a variety of skin types and skin issues.

  • Have an affordable oil cleanser in your kit for the day that a client shows up with a full face of makeup. Wipes will not do what you need them to do in this situation and they can be quite irritating to facial skin.

  • An alternative to having micellar water in your kit would a refreshing toner. I personally don’t carry micellar water in my kit as it is a product I believe that need to be rinsed off the skin.

  • Consider purchasing an eye gel over an eye cream. Eye gels are lighter in texture and consistency and are more likely to work with most cream products. Eye creams can sometimes be too emollient, in turn working against any product placed under the eye. On the occasion, you come across dry under eyes, put a layer of eye gel on to the skin followed by a moisturizer.

  • Facial mists are a great way to pack hydration into the skin. Find an affordable one that you love and stock up on them! We are here for juicy looking skin.

  • Consider having both a gel and a cream moisturizer. Gel moisturizers are best for oily skin types and creams are best for drier and older skin types.  Laying both moisturizers on the skin gives a very soft and plump base. Just don’t use too much.

  • Avoid products that have chemical exfoliants such as glycolic or salicylic acids. Your job is to prep the skin with hydration and moisture and not to treat your client’s skin issues.

  • I ALWAYS have aloe vera gel. It does so much! It works for all skin types to some degree. Oily and combination skin enjoy it as a gel moisturizer (I will mix in with a few drops of oil into the aloe before applying it to the skin) or another layer of skincare. Dry skin enjoys it most as a layer of hydration underneath a thick moisturizer. My new way to use it is to lay down hair edges! I know! Game changer!
