Get out of your own way
I am sure you have seen this statement as you have scrolled through your social media feed. When did social media become so ...teacher like? Any whoooo...This post is not about social media but one of my 2019 lessons.
Read it again. GET OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY. It is an aggressive statement. It implies that you are in the way of your improvement. Your success and future. The statement also highlights the factor of responsibility. Are you to blame for where you are? Who can you blame for where you are? Who IS to blame for where you are? All triggering thought-provoking questions. As a creative, introspection is integral to my artistry. Taking a step back and assess the reasons behind the choices I am making are a part of how I do what I do. We live in a time where modern forms of media open our eyes to all other creatives out there. I would be a liar if I didn’t admit that I have allowed myself to play the comparison game. And I would also be a pretender if I said doubt and fear made me feel like certain doors were only for a select few.
A few weeks ago, my mentor posted up some material in regards to hosting events and IMMEDIATELY I told myself, ‘That’s not for me’ and did not even give it another thought. As I spoke to another makeup artist, (who is also under my mentor and just hosted her second event extremely successfully!), the subject of live events came up and she ended the conversation with, ‘I will wait for you to study the material, and then our conversation will make more sense’. So I prioritized the material into my study time and at the end of it, the only thing I could hear in my head was ‘WHY NOT ME?!!!’
Let us allow ourselves to open doors that we have ASSUMED are not for us to open. Let us not allow fear of adventure and discovery to stop us from learning and broadening our dreams. Perfect is not real. Mastery and profitable skills do not happen overnight. It is a series of doing, failing, studying the data, and then doing it again. Let us cultivate enough trust in ourselves to listen to our intuition. Let us be stubborn enough to ignore the words of the naysayers
My darling creatives, allow yourself to have the AUDACITY to step outside the boundaries that others AND you have imposed on your path. Find some quiet time this month. Do the thing that you do that adds to that quiet time. For me, its a pot of tea and a slice of cake….Go on...You know you want to.. Envision, Plan, Execute!
PS: I am not being ‘preachy’ though...I am just saying... Let us get it in 2020!
PSS: I do not write this out of arrogance or a place of total mastery. I am still learning how to embrace bravado in some choices in my life. I write this out of love in the hope you too will be willing to learn how to be brave. Truly the journey is the destination
