March!
The year is doing that years do. It is taking slow steady steps towards Christmas. I mean March is over! Which also means I am a year older. A girl is approaching that age she could have never fathomed as a kid and oddly enough I have never felt so comfortable in myself.
Proudly, I will say that this comfort is a result of investing in myself. Taking the time to learn who I really am, confront my demons, re-write my story, and to chose life fully. I have plowed and toiled, particularly over the last 6 years, to be the woman that I am today and I repeat, I am incredibly proud of her….of me.
All my life, my birthday month has always been a bit of a song and dance but over the 6 years of plowing and toiling (I know, don't you love the dramatic overtones, LOL), my birthday month has become a serious song and dance.
It is a time where deep reflection has happened, a shift in perspective, and a deeper commitment to myself and my life is established. If you are an African (black) woman reading this, you know how radical it is to choose to live life on your own terms. To outsiders, you seem standoffish, selfish even aloof but, the matter of fact is that you are being a rebel. You have chosen to tear up the fabric that was woven for you ( a fabric created by society and its expectations of you without even your own input!) and you have chosen to weave something new.
As I turn 33, I further commit myself to this life of rebellion. Not just for my sake but for the sake of my daughters and my descendants. A big conversation that is dear to my heart but let me share with you one way how I deepened my commitment to self.
Last year, in March 2021, I decided to have a home beauty treatment every Monday, alternating between a facial and a decolletage treatment. As you know I have attached self care to my skincare so these 90 minutes of me-time have been so soothing and healing. Some treatments have ended in tears, some have ended in dance and others have ended with a huge sigh of relief and a major boost of energy. And to me, that’s not even the best bit. The best bit is that I have not missed a Monday. Now is that, not a commitment to self. So committed that my husband has picked up on my energy and is mindful of making any arrangements on Monday that may interfere with my time. I LOOOOOVVEEE itttt. LOL.
And as a firm believer of ‘there is always room for improvement’, I have already started another beauty related self care action. I will keep that to myself for now and hopefully share it with you next year.
Now that I am a Youtuber, I thought I would use my birthday month to inspire my videos this month, after all, my birthday month is a song and dance. Let me introduce you to the March Diaries. It is a series of videos I did to share my extra birthdays ways and to share what I love. A few cocktails, my birthday cake recipe and even a bit of fashion! And of course some intimate chats as per ushhhhhh! Let me know what you think and may it inspire you to be extra on your birthday month. This blog post is evidence that you just might be playing it small and it’s time you step it up!
Here is epic birthday months and a special big up to all the March babies. We are extra special, LOL!
