HOW TO MASK....IJ STYLE!
I honestly attribute a substantial amount of my skin ‘success’ to my masking ways. I mask almost every day. Sometimes twice a day. Listen. I attached skincare to my self-care ages ago and here we are. I use many types of masks ( the perks of having combination skin and being a skincare lover) but I choose to zone into the clay mask in this blog post for good reason.
I believe all skin types can use clay to mask. Let’s not forget that clay has cleansing properties and I think by now we have established that all skin types need to cleanse their skin. LOL. #washyourface
Here are my top tips on how to incorporate clay into your masking routine.
Use your skin type to ascertain what type of clay will actually work for you. Yes, there are different clays that will suit different skin types. You know I am a huge advocate for self-research as a part of your skincare routine. Off to Google, you go! Ghassoul clay is my go-to. It’s one of the gentlest clays and has this really soft somewhat soapy feeling that I like.
Do not let your mask dry on your skin. A dry mask does not mean that the mask has soaked up all the dirt and sebum from your skin. A dry mask means your skin is getting dry and the clay is pulling out that moisture. Keep your clay mask wet as much as you can by misting it with what you want. A toner, facial water, floral water, a hydrating mist…..You get where I am going with this. I also like to keep my ‘mask wetters’ cheap. It makes sense. We just want to keep the mask damp. Let’s not complicate things
I actually prefer to ONLY buy clay in its raw form and mix my own clay masks. It makes it affordable, a touch better for the environment, and cuts down my desire to always be in search of a mask. To be honest, I could only have ghassoul clay in my mask arsenal and be very happy. Despite masking almost every day, I consider masking an area in my skincare that I spend the least! Buying clay this way heavily contributes to this. But you know me with my subjective talk. It’s your money. Do what you want with it.
I love to mix a few drops of oil into my clay mask. My skin loves the extra nourishment and I feel like the mask does not dry out so much. I think this is a trick all skin types will love especially those who lie on the extreme of the spectrum ; that is the oiliest and the driest.
Use your skin type and skin lifestyle to take into consideration how many times you actually use a face mask. As I said, daily masker here. My combination skin (oily, normal and dry) and my skincare wisdom means that I can get away with using a clay mask everyday. Your skin type and skin lifestyle will help you establish what type of clay to use, how many times you can incorporate it into your skincare routines and what ingredients you choose to mix your clay with (that is if you buy clay in its raw form)
Happy masking folks! Oh and here is to actually recognizing that research is actually a part of your skin routine.
